It’s against Google policy and you could be penalized for doing it but they also can’t really stop it from happening. However, not all links are as good as others.
I got this letter the other day. At first, I thought it was my domain registration, but it clearly isn’t. I then thought it was a basic listing service for my website (which it is) and wondered if that helps my SEO. So I did some research. Turns out that it “could” help SEO but not nearly as much as they want you to believe.
I started looking around and found a ton of information on SEO. I’m not an expert but this guy is: Gotch SEO – YouTube
